Ellen DeGeneres finally tied the knot with longtime girlfriend, Portia de Rossi. In an official statement, their rep said on Saturday, "Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi were married tonight in an intimate ceremony at their home in Los Angeles." The wedding was actually a subdued affair, only being attended by 19 guests, including both of their mothers.
DeGeneres went from stand-up comedy to TV sitcoms, securing supporting roles in two unsuccessful shows, Open House (1989) and Laurie Hill (1992). In 1988, she played a supporting part on the sitcom Duet, and later she declined an offer to take the part of one of the lead characters on Friends. Her real break came when she was given a sitcom of her own, These Friends of Mine, which was later renamed Ellen (1994-1998). The show was very popular, but ratings began declining in April 1997 when DeGeneres publicly revealed that she and her character on the show were lesbian. This reflected considerable Aquarian courage and rebelliousness.
